What is a Prelim?

Prelim stands for 'Preliminary'.  Prelims are held Monday through Thursday the last week of the season (July 11-14), and are organized by age group.  Each swimmer may swim their favorite 3 events.  Relay teams will be assigned by coaching staff.  The top 16 winners of each event will get to go on to Finals.

It is a league requirement that a swimmer must swim in at least 10 practices and swim in at least 2 meets to participate in Prelims.

Events that each swimmer is in will be posted at Franklin the week before the Prelims. The team and coaches count on all the swimmers to be there for the events in which they are entered.  Swimmers may not leave the pool area unless they inform one of their coaches. This is extremely important, especially for relays.  Whole relay teams in the past have had to scratch because one swimmer left!

What is a Final?

Finals are the last event of the season.  The top 16 finishers plus two alternates at Prelims in each event may go on to finals.

What Should I bring?

Be prepared!  Preliminaries are DAY LONG EVENTS!  Bring any items you would normally bring to a meet.  Warm-ups start between 6:30-7am and the events can last well into the afternoon. At prelims, the host team provides a concession stand. RMSL sells T-shirts with a new design every year at each prelim and at finals. Bring money if you plan on purchasing an event t-shirt.

When are Prelims?

What are the requirements to swim at Prelims?

It is a league requirement that a swimmer must swim in at least 10 practices and swim in at least 2 meets to participate in Prelims.

Who gets to participate in Finals?

At Prelims, the top 16 finishers, along with 2 alternates (places 17 & 18) in each event will qualify to swim at the Finals for that event.  No points are awarded for Prelims.   Alternates should also attend Finals and be prepared to swim.

Some swimmers will qualify for a relay but no individual events.  It is important that relay swimmers attend finals if their relay qualifies.  If one swimmer doesn’t show up, that relay team can’t swim!

At Finals, points are awarded to all 16 places.  Total points determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams in each division and those teams receive trophies.  Team Trophies are also awarded for each gender / age group based on points earned.
